This page includes information you should be familiar with when entering books into the CBCA Book of the Year Awards.

Submitting copies of your books

You will need to send us five copies of each title entered for each category. If entering a set of books, you will need to send us five sets for each category entered.

Note...

The books should be sent as soon as possible after completing your entry. They must be received at our office no later than 14 days following the closing date for entries.

Books not received by the due date will be deemed ineligible and will not be considered for judging.

If you are concerned that your books may not be received by the due date, you can submit the titles in pdf format by sending to... awards@cbca.org.au for judging, until the actual copies are received.

Notes for Book Awards entries

Publisher

This is the publishing house or imprint label that will appear on certificates and any lists produced by the CBCA in relation to the Awards.

If your entry is self-published please enter your Full Name. The details associated with the publisher will be the primary contact for further information in relation to this entry.

The publisher is responsible for ensuring compliance with the CBCA Book of the Year Awards Policy and forwarding nomination information on to the authors and illustrators.

Title

Title of the book, not including sub-heading or series titles

Series (if applicable)

To be used if the entry is part of a series, the number may also be included. This is for reference only and will not appear on certificates or any lists produced by the CBCA.

ISBN

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique numeric commercial book identifier. Publishers purchase ISBNs from Thorpe-Bowker as the official affiliate of the International ISBN Agency in Australia.

The ISBN identifies a book or other book-like product (such as an audiobook) in a specific format and edition, but also the publisher.

Published (month)

The month that the book was released. Books are only eligible if published in the year of the Awards cycle.

Format

Books are only acceptable in printed format. No manuscripts, audio books or ebooks are eligible.

Printed (country)

Books do not need to be printed in Australia to be eligible.

Category

Books may be entered in more than one category; A new entry is required for each book in multiple categories.

Older Readers
Entries in this category may be fiction, drama or poetry and should be appropriate in style and content for readers in their secondary years of schooling. Ages 13-18 years.
Note: Books in this category are for mature readers and some may deal with particularly challenging themes including violence and suicide. Parental guidance is recommended
Younger Readers
Entries in this category may be fiction, drama or poetry and should be appropriate in style and content for readers from the middle to upper primary years. Ages 7-12 years.
Note: Some of the titles in this category may only be suitable for readers who are in the upper primary years as they contain mature themes, including violence. Parental guidance is recommended.
Early Childhood
Entries in this category may be fiction, drama or poetry and should be appropriate in style and content for children who are at pre-reading or early stages of reading. Ages 0-6 years.
Picture Books
Entries in this category should be outstanding books of the Picture Book genre in which the author and illustrator achieve artistic and literary unity or, in wordless picture books, where the story, theme or concept is unified through illustrations. Ages 0-18 years. (NB. Some of these books may be for mature readers).
Eve Pownall Award
Entries in this category should be books which have the prime intention of documenting factual material with consideration given to imaginative presentation, interpretation and variation of style. Ages 0-18 years.
Note: Some books in this category are for mature readers and may deal with particularly challenging themes including violence and suicide. Parental guidance is recommended
New Illustrator Award
Entries in this category are for books where the illustrator is emerging or new to the field of children’s book illustration. The entry must be the illustrator’s first children’s illustrated book published where illustrations form a significant part of the book’s narrative or information content. The age range for this category is 0 to 18 years.

Creator (Author)

Creator details need to be completed. If contact with the Creator is to be only through the publisher, their state of residence needs to be noted, not the state where the publishing house is located.

Creator (Illustrator)

If applicable, Creator details need to be completed. If contact with the Creator is to be only through the publisher, their state of residence needs to be noted, not the state where the publishing house is located.

Creator (Other)

This is for additional authors and/or illustrators associated with the book. Details on the creator need to be completed.

If contact with the creator is to be only through the publisher, their state of residence needs to be noted, not the state where the publishing house is.

Generally editors, graphic designers and others associated with the creation of the entry are not included as creators on the entry.

Book Cover Permission

Permission for the cover of the book entered to be used by CBCA for publicity purposes, including merchandise and publications produced by the CBCA for promotion of the Awards. (Policy Section 12)

Creator Information

Indicate if you can provide further information regarding the Shortlisted creators including background information and photos should the CBCA require this for publicity purposes will be provided.

Media Participation

Please indicate if the Author or Illustrator is available and willing to participate in media events including radio, television and/or printed articles.Contact for such publicity will be made after the Notable and Shortlist Announcements by CBCA communications team. Your personal contact information will be kept confidential. Interview requests will be made via the CBCA, not directly from the media.

Creator Residency permission

Indicate if any of the Creators are NOT willing to have their town or suburb of residence released to the media.

Provide details in the Notes section.

Cover Image

With the Entry, you will be required to upload a Book Cover image.

The file must be web compatible... either 'JPG/JPEG' or 'PNG' format, RGB colour space, and approx. <= 600px wide and <= 2000 kb file size.

Name the file so it relates to the Title of the book. (e.g. 'my_childrens_book.jpg') Avoid using special characters in the name.

The image should be of good quality, either from artwork, a scan or other (but NOT a thumbnail or a photo). It must be of the front cover only.
